Become a Trustee and Make a Difference

Our Trustees are an important part of our Trust community. They bring their skills, experience and enthusiasm to help us ensure that every child across our schools has the opportunity to thrive.

Becoming a Trustee is a rewarding way to give something back to your local community. You will work alongside fellow Trustees and our senior leaders, helping to shape the future of our Trust and ensuring that the needs of our children, families, staff and school communities remain at the heart of the decisions we make.

Why become a Trustee?

Being a Trustee gives you the opportunity to:

  • Make a real difference to children and families within your local community.

  • Help shape the future of our schools and Trust.

  • Use your own knowledge and experience for the benefit of others.

  • Develop new skills and gain valuable Board-level experience.

  • Meet and work alongside people who share your commitment to children and education.

  • Be part of a team that is passionate about helping our schools and communities flourish

Who are we looking for?

Our communities are made up of people with a wealth of different experiences, perspectives and skills, and we want our Trust Board to reflect that diversity. We welcome interest from people from all walks of life. You may have experience in finance, HR, business, education, law, estates, safeguarding or leadership, but you may also bring valuable experience from other professions, voluntary roles or your wider community.  You don't need to have been a Trustee or Governor before. Enthusiasm, good judgement, curiosity and a genuine desire to make a positive difference for children are just as important.

What does being a Trustee involve?

You don't need to be an expert in education to become a Trustee. What matters most is a commitment to our children and communities, a willingness to contribute and the confidence to offer both support and constructive challenge.

As a Trustee, you will be expected to:

  • Attend four Trust Board meetings each year, contributing to discussions and key decisions about the future of our Trust.

  • Serve on a sub-committee, such as Finance or Personnel, providing greater oversight and scrutiny in a particular area.

  • Prepare for meetings by reading reports and information in advance and asking thoughtful and constructive questions.

  • Support and challenge our leaders, helping us continually improve and deliver the very best for our pupils.

  • Share your skills, knowledge and experience while working collaboratively with other Trustees and Trust leaders.

  • Take part in appropriate training to help you feel confident and informed in your role.

  • Occasionally serve on ad hoc panels, which could include recruitment, appeals or other panels as required.

Come and make a difference with us

Our Trustees are volunteers, but the contribution they make is invaluable. By giving your time, experience and perspective, you can play an important part in helping our schools provide the very best opportunities for every child, now and in the future.

"Becoming a trustee at Kingsway allowed me to give back to the community I love, while unexpectedly fast-tracking my own career.

Gaining experience in strategic decisions, oversight of people management, and learning how to maximise budgets to support pupils with high deprivation and complex SEN provided an exceptional learning curve that helped me secure a promotion in my day job! You are never alone either - the board is packed with a wealth of supportive experience.

If you want to develop your professional skills while making a genuine community impact, absolutely go for it." - TE, Trustee

"I came into school governance as I thought I had a lot to give and was looking for a meaningful opportunity to volunteer. I work with children and had an interest in education as a part of childhood development so it seemed a good fit.

What I didn’t expect was how much I gained. I have learned so much from experts on leadership, governance, strategy, budgeting, data, managing complaints and recruitment. Many of these skills I wouldn’t have gained in my place of work and I have been able to take much of my learning on to advance career.

I would highly recommend others who want to meaningfully impact children in their community to consider this interesting role. They won’t regret it." - AM, Trustee

"Being a trustee of Kingsway Community Trust is a great experience. It gives me a lot of personal satisfaction knowing I am supporting the schools to be the best that they can be. Its really varied, and you get a real insight into the school and opportunities to support and make progress. If you are thinking of becoming a trustee, I would say give it a go, I highly recommend it!" - RC, Trustee
